Metro Bowls by Frederik Roijé

Here is an interesting series of designs by Dutch designer Frederik Roijé that was presented at imm cologne this week. Each bowl is shaped like a city map (above: Manhattan) and is elegantly designed in cast aluminum. Sure to be a conversation piece. For more on the series go here.

Transform your water bottle into an easy pour water picture

Here’s a clever idea for those of you that have not converted back to the tap. GR Lab, and industrial design firm has launched a simple yet innovative product called the ‘Aqua Jar’ that transforms any plastic bottle into an easy-pour pitcher. It is made up of the usual eco-friendly materials and is offered in three colors (orange, graphite and frost).

Digitize your time

Digital clock: only figures, no case, only the necessary—only accurate time. Each figure has self-contained power supply and independent control, it can be fixed to any surface autonomously. A light sensor will switch the clock to an invert mode: the figures are white in the dark time of day and black at daytime.

Digital Ruler?

We’re not quite sold on this “new school” approach to measuring. We’ll have to get our hands on one to try it out for ourselves. Nevertheless this ruler tells you how long your line is digitally on the surface, so in theory you won’t misread your ruler ever again! For more on this product by Shay Shafranek you know what to do.

More than 510,000 tons of milk and juice cartons are generated every year in the United States, but unfortunately, less than .05% get recycled. This unfortunate fact prompted Portland-based industrial designer Schreiber into action. He’s developed functional wallets from the very paper cartons that we so readily discard.

Milkmuny pays local groups seeking to raise funds for the cartons they collect. After giving them a good scrub down, they create multi-pocketed wallets through an intricate folding process. Wallets are priced at $10 a piece, and come with a 45 day warranty. A percentage of sales are donated to various environmental groups. Schreiber explains:

“I wanted to challenge traditional design thinking and create a mass produced product that didn’t expend more energy to create or require more resources to produce but was also aesthetically pleasing and uncompromisingly functional.”

Nokia Phone recharges itself

Nokia has developed a prototype cell phone that can recharge itself. Yahoo explains “… It harvests ambient radio waves from the air, and turns that energy into usable power. Enough, at least, to keep a cell phone from running out of juice.” Peak over to Yahoo for more on the prototype.
