Curating the white house art collection

The word is that President Obama and the First Lady are admirers of bold abstract paintings.

The Obamas are sending ripples through the art world as they put the call out to museums, galleries and private collectors that they’d like to borrow modern art by African-American, Asian, Hispanic and female artists for the White House. In a sharp departure from the 19th-century still lifes, pastorals and portraits that dominate the White House’s public rooms, they are choosing bold, abstract art works.

To find out more on their choices you know what to do.

Show Some Love

In an effort to strengthen the Philadelphia design community, AIGA Philadelphia called all designers to “show some love” and submit their work to the Philadelphia Design Awards. GDloft was commissioned to design the events catalog and is quite nice to say the least. We’ve included an excerpt from their website describing their thinking behind it:

In the preliminary stages of the catalog, gdloft focused on representing all designs, winners or not, as well as creating a book to serve as “art” within the context of a gallery (for the winners exhibition). The catalog print-run was limited to the same amount of entries received (576) to represent all the work of the design community. Using a variable printing program, each cover is a different color of a predetermined spectrum; thus, making each catalog entirely unique— no two pieces are identical. In addition, each catalog was individually numbered. When all the catalogs are stacked together the spines create a seamless spectrum of color that produces the quality of a sculpture.

NYSAT Project Map

For those of you that missed it. You can now access the artwork created during the NYSAT project that went down in NYC a few weeks ago through google maps.

In an attempt to build a coherent vision of what took place the 25th, this map offers images of 189 NPA city Outdoor advertising locations. Of those 189, nearly 130 show their progression from illegal ad locations, to whitewashed messaging boards, to artworks and communications created by concerned public individuals. The project, Lasting not much more than 24hrs, covered nearly 19,000 square feet of illegal advertising.

Packaging for Contractors?

Hmmm…

This is the prettiest packaging of building materials I have ever seen! Normally there is little or nothing inspiring about the big bags of cement, but Mouse Graphics have gone in a new direction with their package design, and I can imagine that construction workers all over the world will thank them for it!”

NYC vs. London

Back in February we wrote about ‘Secret Wars’ a freestyle event that brings creatives together to battle it out on a blank 20 foot canvass.

From June 12–22 Secret Wars will be hosting a series of events culminating into a final throw-down between NYC and London-based artists. For more details you know what to do.

Quote of the Week

People think that design is styling. Design is not style. It’s not about giving shape to the shell and not giving a damn about the guts. Good design is a renaissance attitude that combines technology, cognitive science, human need, and beauty to produce something that the world didn’t know it was missing.
