The Bay vs. The Bag

Dig this stop motion inspired video by Save the Bay as part of their new campaign to rid the bay of plastic bags. While the city of San Francisco has made a lot of progress to banish plastic bags, there are still a whopping 100 bags in the bay per seal, duck, and pelican.

“Shepard Fairey Is Not a Crook”

Steven Heller takes a critical look at Shepard Fairy’s controversial work.

…His is a wink and a nod toward visual culture and media monopoly. No designer with Fairey’s experience and historical knowledge could be so stupid as to pinch such visible historical artifacts and call them his own. On the contrary, Fairey sees popular visual culture in terms of what Tom Wolfe has called a “big closet” of shared objects…

Head over to The Moment blog for to read the article in full.

Quote of the Week

“Designers wander around looking around for their higher purpose the way a golden retriever looks for his tennis ball… I just know there’s something here if I could just claim it… like this itch that can’t be scratched”

100 Brands of Interest

David Pache has compiled his second edition of “100 Brands of Interest”. What is interesting about this catalog is that it showcases how creative agencies brand themselves.

David says: It is purely to create awareness within the community and provide some useful insight for any newcomers who may be struggling to create a brand for themselves. It can be said that you are your greatest critic therefore this can often cause much procrastination, especially in this line of work, when trying to pin point the right brand for yourself.

Design _________ a Depression

Image from New York Times

The New York Times recently published a piece “Designing Through a Depression” by Allison Arief that continues the heated debate on the affects of design due to the economic downturn. Below is an excerpt:

Addressing other nations at the G-20 last Wednesday, President Obama suggested that the United States was unlikely to return to its role as a “voracious consumer market.” If Obama’s right — and the experience of Japan, post-recession, suggests he may well be —what might that mean for design?

Putting old Pantone books to good use

This design solution to maximize color under a minimal budget is fantastic. Design studio Egelnick and Webb collected old swatchbooks and screen-printed over them which produced a myriad of bold color variations for House of Holland’s Autumn/Winter 09 promotional material.
